3D printing with ABS

This three-block copolymer based on Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene, more commonly known as ABS, is one of the most popular thermoplastics in 3D printing with plastic. The parts printed with ABS have an excellent price/quality ratio. In comparison to PLA, the other great plastic commodity for 3D printing, its mechanical properties and resistance to high temperatures are superior, although its definition of details is inferior. Each of the three blocks contributes a different characteristic: the Acrylonitrile provides rigidity, resistance to chemicals, durability, and stability in high temperatures; the Butadiene offers toughness to especially low temperatures and shock resistance; and Styrene provides mechanical resistance, rigidity, and gloss.

3D printing process with ABS

3D printing with ABS is more complex than with PLA as it requires more control over the temperature in the printing chamber. The base also has to be heated to 90°C and the extrusion at 240°C.

Technical specifications of ABS

Color
  • Black; Grey; White; Purple
  • Red; Green; Yellow; Brown; Orange
Features
  • Mechanical resistance: 39 MPa 01.
  • Flexural modulus: 1.9 GPa 02.
  • Shock resistance: 25000 J/m 03.
  • Softening temperature: 103°C. 04.
Benefits

Constant mechanical properties up to 100°C. Parts printed with ABS may be well post processed, it is common to sand, glue, drill, etc. ABS is a popular material for 3D printing, so we always have it available and in stock, guaranteeing an unbeatable delivery time.

PRODUCT SPECIFICATION

Custom parts of 3D printed ABS

Printing with ABS is ideal for all kinds of general uses thanks to its good mechanical properties. However, parts printed with ABS may appear to fade if they are exposed to UV radiation, meaning that ASA would be the preferred candidate for outdoor use.

The process step by step

1
3D File

Send us your 3D file ready to print.
If you do not have the file, send us the item and we will create the CAD file.
If you need a design from scratch, our designers will gladly prepare a quote for you.

2
3D Printing

We will create the process file adapted to the technology and materials that will be used to produce your item.
We prepare and condition the printer to guarantee optimum quality.

3
Cleaning and post processing

This step is key when meeting your requirements, and it is one that we are highly specialised in.
The removal of the printing support structures, heat treatments, and surface finishes (blasting, polishing, tooling) are some of the most common post processes.
